Addition to existing two-story single-family house on a 2 1/2 acre lot, built in 1985 on a secluded forest road in central Massachusetts. New, single-story in-law suite extends the original structure into the backyard, increasing the overall building footprint by 750 square feet.

Like an alcove studio apartment. it includes a generous L-shaped bedroom, bathroom, and kitchenette. An intermediate sunroom sequesters the private functions of the suite from the adjoining, expanded outdoor deck. The sunroom also provides the suite with direct means of access to the backyard, giving onto a porch that overlooks the woodland beyond. The suite is wheelchair accessible, set at the same level as the garage of the main house. A large, new combination mudroom and laundry room connects the suite to both the garage and the main house. Garage access thus reconfigured, a new powder room is integrated into the foyer where the mudroom meets the main house.
