CASE STUDY HOUSE
CHICAGO

Year: 2023
Location: Bronzeville, Chicago, Illinois
Project Team: Rekha Auguste-Nelson, Isabel Strauss, Farnoosh Rafaie
With:
Glen Marquardt & Blaine Hornung

This project riffs on the traditional "Case Study House" as it proffers a Chicago rowhouse as a possible avenue for piecemeal reparations.

It is a triple-decker sited on a vacant, city-owned lot. The program is varied and flexible to accommodate the changing needs of a multi-generational family over time. Moving focus from a nuclear unit to an extended collective precipitated a literal shift in the typical layout of the rowhouse, morphing from a stack of siloed spaces into a series of manipulable thresholds that alternately encourage gathering and seclusion.

The building grid provides a layered system for the interior wall partitions to follow - or abandon. At times, the rectilinear lines establish the major axes of the plan; at others, the diagonals dictate programmatic thresholds. The building is serviced by twin staircases, one for the main house and one for an ADU, on the top floor. Outfitted with skylights and enveloped in translucent glass, these stairs bring daylight into the center of the building plan.
